blast from the past

In the summer of 2008, I attended Harvard Beijing Academy, a full-immersion Chinese language program. It was...intense.

At the end of the whole ordeal, though, I helped design a t-shirt for my class. We were the fourth-year class. Also, the Beijing Olympics were that year. So I kinda went with those two ideas and came up with...

(front)

(back)

The designs were based on the designs and logos that were being used for the Beijing Olympics.
The front was based on the main logo...

for the Olympics, the seal looks both like a running athlete and like the character 京(jing), which represents 北京(Beijing.)

for this design, the seal looks both like a studying student and like a 4, which represents our 4th year class.

The back was based on the little symbols they were using to represent the different sports.

fun fact: these symbols are supposed to imitate 甲骨文(jia gu wen), one of the earliest forms of Chinese writing.

All of this was done in collaboration with Yuhki Yamashita, a classmate of mine, who was really great, and looks like he's doing really well right now.

some covers

Two covers that I did for The Herald.

This one ran last week, and illustrated an article covering a Wesleyan program that offered college courses to prison inmates. A photo of the cover that was eventually made from my image is below...

And this one ran this week, and illustrated an article profiling youtube celebrity producer (and Yalie) Kurt Schneider. Photo of the final product below:

the yale herald predicts trends for 2010

Prediction 1: Obesity

"An obese messiah (Oprah showed early promise but proved weak-willed) will rise from the rubble of a thousand gnarled treadmills and lead us, albeit at a comfortable walking pace, into 2010 and beyond."

Prediction 2: Male Prostitution.

"I foresee an opening of the floodgates as a trickle of customers turns into a torrent of men and women looking for escapism in the arms of a one-time Lehman Brothers analyst."
