THE COVERS

I did about a cover a week for the Herald last semester.
I spent a lot of time and energy on them and was really proud of how they looked, so I always meant to post them on this blog. Sadly, I was also always too lazy to photograph the actual nice, layed-out covers with text and headlines and everything, so I never ended up posting anything.
But now, excitingly for you, I decided to just post my favorite cover image files anyway. There aren't headlines, so you'll just have to imagine how great they looked once they were layed out, but something is better than nothing, right?

2/13/10
The Valentine's Day Issue

The cover story was the tale of a reporter's visit to a local strip joint. Really fun to do.

2/20/10

The cover story for this issue was actually changed just a few hours before the newspaper went to print (I was told about the change at about 11pm on a Thursday night...) I produced this cover from scratch within those few hours. It was an intense experience, made doubly intense by the content of the story...it was about the University's flawed response to the death of one of its undergraduate students, Andre Narcisse. It was a real challenge to think of a respectful way to illustrate this story while honoring the memory of the student, all under an incredible time pressure. I hope that in the end this silhouette of one of Yale's most iconic buildings, Harkness Tower, did a good job.

3/27/10
The April Fool's Issue

The cover story this week was a series of blurbs featuring tall tales and urban legends of Yale. Depicted is one of the many statues on campus, looking very distinguished with a bong.

4/17/10
Comics Issue!

The cover story for this issue was actually a comic that I illustrated about secret societies at Yale. If you go searching through this blog's archives you'll probably run into it.

last but not least...

9/11/10
the first issue of a new semester...

The cover story for this week was about 360 State Street, the first new apartment building in New Haven for 20 years. Is it the symbol of a New Haven Renaissance? Had a lot of fun gis'ing images of renaissance clouds for this one.

some stuff
